I have the impression that we pretty much agree that in certain decks Brainstorm is just better because of its instant speed and the fact that it gets you up to three new cards, while Preordain (and Ponder, even though less) can be used in a broader variety of decks.

I'm more interested in how people feel that the cards are best played in combination. For example, let's take each possible combo:
Brainstorm/Ponder Brainstorm/Preordain Ponder/Preordain Brainstorm/Ponder/Preordain
You have the mana for all of them and the game situation dictates that you're looking for answers or that last combo card. How do you optimally play them? In my experience, you usually want to play the Brainstorm last... unless you've got dead cards in your hand that you want to put on the pile and then shuffle away with the Ponder or Preordain. To see the most cards, I think you want to have that shuffle option before the Brainstorm.

With Preordain, I am at least putting those particular copies on the bottom of my library, and then Brainstorming. And I agree, I would Brainstorm last. That seems to be the best way to dig deeper.

Or Impulse?
I run a very fun deck based on Turbo Xerox and its got... 3 Brainstorm: Digs 3 deep. Yes I can't shuffle it away, but normally I dont want to. 3 Impulse: Digs 4 deep. This is a tricky one, sometimes, I have two or even three good choices, but I only get to keep one. 4 Portent: My shuffler if I need it, but I also get to target my opponent to set up their next draws if I so choose. 4 Peek: Instant speed Gitaxian Probe.
I must say I play in paper mostly, and it's generally better to run Ponder than Preordain (because of the unrandomness of human shuffling).
