Hey everyone! I'm back with another round, albeit a short one, of my journey on mtgo. Just a recap of week 2 before we start. I got a standard pauper deck for the league for .33 tix and went 2-2 (losing to avery61 2-1 two times) overall.
Before we get started I guess I'll talk about the deck that I played (for more details check out episode 64 of pauper to the people podcast). I have been playing a U/G mill deck featuring the card Jace's Erasure. I have really enjoyed it so far, and you can't really get any cheaper than what I paid for it. This is one of the main draws towards pauper.
So I made some tweaks to the deck and started playing my league matches for the week. I was feeling pretty optimistic about the deck, knowing that if things may have played out a little differently, I could be 4-0 in my first week in the league. To save some time, I ended up finishing 1-3 this week, leaving me with a total overall record of 3-5. This isn't the greatest, but for this only being my 3rd week on mtgo with limited money, mainly because of my stubbornness to spend, and a limited card pool, I am fairly happy. I said last post that I am competitive, but sometimes having a great time trumps the will to win. I have met some really great people through the league thus far, and feel like I'm becoming a much better magic player.
The main highlight of the week for me was my match vs gabochido. I won't say much about his deck other than it has a great deal of burn cards. This is probably the worst match-up I can think of for my deck because it relies on fog effects to buy me time. Unfortunately for me, burn literally burns through the fog and tears me apart. I lost game 1 rather handily and went into game 2 after sideboarding not knowing what to expect. I managed to make some good plays and win, forcing a game 3. Game 3 really could have been anyone's game, but my inexperience both in mtg and managing the ui on mtgo. I had a brindle boar onto the battlefield and he had a fumespitter and some other creatures. I blocked one of his 1/1 creatures with the brindle boar and then pressed f6. You may be wondering what I was thinking, and I can certainly tell you that I wasn't thinking anything. I didn't see the move, he then sacrificed the spitter killing my boar, without giving me a chance to gain the precious 4 life.
I knew I messed up, and it wouldn't have been such a big deal if the game wasn't as close as it was. I had him down to 7 cards in his library and would have finished him off by his next upkeep if I had 1 more turn. I'm not complaining in the least bit. I am actually glad this happened because I know it will never happen again. We learn from our mistakes, and this example is no different. I later got to talk to gabo after the match, really nice guy by the way, and it appeared he also made a mistake that would've won him the game no matter what I did, so I didn't feel so bad after that.
Tips for a new player, from a new player:
Learn from your mistakes:
As a new player, I feel like it is easy to give the excuse, "I got flooded" or, "I got mana screwed." I do not doubt that that could definitely be the case, but I think it's too much of a cop out. I know some people who are like this that I play with, and I can already see that my skill level has increased exponentially over theirs. Think of some things that you could have done differently. Should you have mulliganed? This is another trap question, but sometimes that is all you can do differently. Sometimes you can't do anything. You may lose even though you played perfectly. Try and learn from mistakes, and then move on from there.
My shoutout for the week goes to gabo. It was great playing with you, and I just wanted to thank you for guiding me through some of the questions I had concerning the ui during our match. Look forward to playing again!
As always, I enjoy reading everyone's feedback so feel free to do so!
