Anyone else ever attempt, or successfully, write one?

When I was around 16-17 years old I wrote quite a lot of lore about fantasy world for possible novel, but never actually started to write the novel.

I read a lot of David Eddings novels in high school (fantasty stuff), and I was always impressed by how he created worlds, down to making up currency, detailed maps, etc. He would do almost a year of writing before he even started the novel itself.

Yeah I have read all his books also. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis however are much higher in my rankings regarding the lore and the background.

....because I have the time. Yeah, right. Anyone else ever attempt, or successfully, write one? I wrote several chapters... oh, 11-12 years ago. I would say I had about half of a novel done. Lost most of it in a bad computer failure, and stopped at that point. It was too depressing having to start over, and my schedule at the time just didn't allow it anyway. I found some old disks a few months back though, with a good amount of notes about the world and the setting I had built for the book. It's an itch i've been thinking of scratching ever since. And my english is better than it was a decade ago, so the overal quality would likely be better. I just don't know where I would find the time for it. Probably one of those things which I'll keep on the back burner forever. Anyway... What have you been working on Chris? What kind of tone or setting are you tinkering with?

Also if you ever decide to publish it and are forced to publish it without publisher (pay the costs of printing etc on your own) I can do the layout/pagination in InDesgin for you for very cheap. That is (one thing) that I do in my own company. Designing layout for book is actually pretty fun and once everything is set it is only a matter of mechanical work to assemble the text to the layout and make sure there are as few mistakes as possible (there are always mistakes in the layout, even in the books published with big companies)

Regarding publishing, I try to not put the cart before the horse, so to speak. But ever since I got my Nook about 3 months ago, I've been really fascinated by the idea of e-publishing, with additional small print runs through a smaller house, something like Permuted Press.
And, if the house doesn't give it away at this point, zombie novel. I'm a sucker for them.
Finished my first chapter last night at about 1200 words. Only 90K more to go, give or take.

Zombie novel, uh? Interesting. Not to spoil anything, but what kind a setting are you working with? Current time, near future, medieval-space-retro? Any particular inspirations?

Current time.
I'm aware that I'm not treading any new ground, but I have 8 failed "new ground" attempts sitting on my hard drive from years back, so at least I'm making progress this time. ;D

I have published four (three fantasy, one crime). Sadly, they are all in Swedish and not translated to anything that people actually speak in the wider world

That's not at all a recipe for disaster. ;D Also, 4 chapters in, and I wrote a short story last night. So, at least I'm writing.

So, at least I'm writing. I made an attempt to translate the first chapter of my first novel for a New York publishing house, didnt work out very well. But if you would like to read it, I could send it (PM me, that goes for anyone else if they want to) My publisher just closed down shop so now I am looking for a new one for my next 3 novels (already finished).
