www.mtgcast.com/?p=22033Chris welcomes Matti Palola, all the way from Finland (and tomorrow) on the show. Matti is the main moderator of the Pauper to the People forums, and a huge cube fan. They discuss a certain player’s alleged cheating issues, self-censorship in podcasting, do a cube “crack-a-pack”, and look into a couple of new sideboard cards that have been popping up in the Affinity list. This is international podcasting at it’s finest. This is Pauper to the People.

Thanks for having me on I wanna go back to our crack-a-pack for a while still. One thing I should have mentioned about Bloodstained Mire for people who are not familiar with cube drafting is that lands that fix are much more higher in the picking order than in a normal draft environment. That is because in a normal environment you get about 21-25 playables so each playable card is very important in order to build a deck and you can't "waste" picks for fixers. However in a cube draft you can have 30 very good cards and you need to cut down to 22-24. That leaves a lot room to pick fixing that enables you to play your deck.

I saw that in mtgcast.com comments grumpyoldgamer was asking for the cards in the crack-a-pack. I don't have them anymore separated but I'll try to remember:
Swords to Plowshares Savannah Lions Weathered Wayfarer Goldmeadow Harrier Wrath of God Moat Preordain Rite of Replication Volrath's Stronghold Diregraf Ghoul Grim Lavamancer Wheel of Fortune Garruk Wildspeaker Bloodstained Mire Pernicious Deed
And P1P1 for Chris was Wrath of God. That pack was stuffed with lots of good cards for aggressive decks and lots of white cards. Picking WoG as P1 from this pack is mean because the player next to you can think that he can wheel aggressive cards from the pack and commit to aggro, while you have the silver bullet against them that they haven't seen.

I'd gone for Pernicious Deed since it can function as a Wrath but is more versatile. The fetch lands help getting the colors needed without really committing to black and green only.

That's a tough one. Not knowing the Cube, my first instinct would be to take Pernicious Deed.
From my experience however, while Lands which can produce all kinds of colors (ex. City of Brass) are pretty high picks all around, other Lands, like Fetchlands, are often prime picks only in pack 2 or 3. Obviously, this change from one playgroup to another, but there is the possibility that Bloodstained Mire could table. With BR Aggro being one of my favorite archetype to draft in Cube, I think I would go with Grim Lavamancer and try to build that deck. Might even get Wheel of Fortune...

Id just like to say I particularly enjoyed this weeks episode.
I would have taken Garruk, but then, I've never played a cube draft so I've no idea how important it is to pick up certain tools. I know from LR podcast that mass removal is overrated in normal limited drafts so a bomby threat like Garruk would be better there.
Any chance of using a pauper cube for crack-a-pack?
And thanks for adding those permissions to the podcast episode threads!

And thanks for adding those permissions to the podcast episode threads! I think the problem with using a limited mindset like BREAD in cube is that there really aren't any "dregs", so to speak. I could be way off base on that too, though. But, I've not done a cube draft either, only mostly assembled a pauper cube. That was a pretty insane pack to have to pick from too. My choice was primarilly about the quality of the other white cards in it, and the number of them. In addition, Wrath is one of the few cards (barring anything from that point forward) that I had ever played with. And from hearing other people talk about cube drafting, blue can be hotly contested, which means I would consider avoiding it entirely. But those were just my thoughts when the choice was presented to me.
