There are not many common cards spoiled yet, but one that I like in limited is: It works really well with undying. There is only one common undying card so far (if you don't count the Cathar, which is kinda like undying, but a WW will be difficult to cast consistently on turn 2 with a G available on turn three.) However, if we do look at the red undying card: Nearheath Stalker would come back as a 5/2. If you then cast Hunger of the Howlpack it will become an 8/5. I hope there are more (cheaper & common) Undying cards on which to slap Hunger of the Howlpack. I'm hoping for a 1/2 for 2? If there are, would this card see Pauper play? How about GW decks with Selfless Cathar or some other cheap Morbid trigger? It just seems that +3/+3 for G is worth exploring.

Hunger works well against undying, right?

Well it can, but that was not my point. I did joke on Facebook when Undying was first mentioned that someone will be using travel preps on an opponent's creatures to keep Undying from bringing them back. Fling could also be used quite well with Undying creatures Morbid may be easier to trigger now.

Ok, so now that the pre-release is over, I'm sure some of you get what I was trying to say here. Hunger of the Howlpack was as good as I thought it would be. Unfortunately, I had zero in both of my Sealed Pools.
I did go undefeated for the pre-release weekend, earning #1 & #3 spots in each tournament. Day 1 was a field of 43 and day 2 was a little smaller. I will post more later.

I realized that the last time I played paper was the Innistrad pre-release.

Day 1: This deck was particularly Pauper-related, since my deck only had two rare cards and two commons were the MVPs, by a long-shot. At first glance, I was very disappointed. The guy across from me cracked a pack-one Sorin and I pulled zero money cards . I really wanted to play blue flyers, but only had 3 creatures in blue and very little support. In fact, I did not play a single blue card (even with flashback cost) all weekend. I also had very sparse removal and only two cards which handled flyers. I was depressed. As I sat down for game one, I expected to lose quickly and often. To save time, I pre-sleeve my lands (10 each) and as I shuffled my deck to begin the first match, I shuffled the wrong pile of lands! The result was I had zero Forests, my main color, and 10 each of Islands and Plains with zero spells to cast in those colors. I realized, as poker-facededly as I could what I had done after I looked at an opener with two Islands. The good news is, I won that game and continued to 2-0 my opponents until I went 2-1 in the final match to make the number one spot in the top 16 of a field of 43. We split top 16 at 7:30am and called it a night. The deck: Creatures: Avacyn’s Pilgrim Dawntreader Elk Gatstaff Shepherd Hinterland Hermit One-Eyed Scarecrow Ulvenwald Bear (2) Pireheart Wolf (VERY GOOD in Limited) Afflicted Deserter Festerhide Boar Skirsdag Cultist Falkenrath Noble Grizzled Outcast Hollowhenge Beast Flayer of the Hatebound (My only 'Bomb') Instants/Sorceries: Faithless Looting Geistflame Caravan Vigil Ranger’s Guile Tragic Slip Wild Hunger Artifacts: Cobbled Wings Runechanter’s Pike 16/23 cards are common. The deck was VERY consistent with a low curve. The success came mostly from being patient with the Morbid triggers, even with Caravan Vigil. In my closest matchup (the only 2-1), my opponent cast his Vigil turn one, on the play. I had mine in my opener and waited so that I could drop the land into play, erasing the Mana deficit. Highlight of the day: Match 3 I was playing a good player who had just played/transformed his Huntsmaster of the Fells, killing one of my 2 creatures and leaving a board state of: Ravager of the Fells + Wolf Token vs. unattached Runechanter's Pike + Skirsdag Cultist. I untapped, sacked my Cultist to itself targeting the wolf token, then Tragic Slipped the Ravager, then dropped a Morbided Festerhide Boar. Leaving the board state a 5/5 Trampling Boar w/Runechanter's Pike vs. Zip. Yep, I won. MVPs: You guest it, two commons. & . Tragic Slip was very consistent removal. It was Geistflame sometimes and it was Smite the Monstrous most of the time, all in a one casting cost package. Wild Hunger was a late game groan test. In one match-up where I was behind, I was able to cast it and flash it back on two creatures, wiping my opponent's board and hitting for 11 or so, while keeping both my creatures alive. The one toughness boost is critical. This card is a limited bomb. I think both of these cards should be given a look in Pauper Constructed, but I'll leave that up to you. I only play Limited .

Day 2: I opened some bombs and there was some synergy. I was worried that it was too gimmicky, but it worked out. When you chain together early bombs with late bombs, your opponent just runs out of answers. These games were actually closer and the deck was less consistent than my first deck (see earlier post) but I was able to pilot it to the top 8 without a loss and split another prize pool.
I'll post the deck-list, but there is not much Pauper to this one. The only commentary is that Tribute to Hunger is bad, bad, bad in this format. With all those tokens and a stalled board, you're just embarrassed to cast it. An 18th land would have been more relevant. I put it in hoping to live the dream of a lone Invisible Stalker, but my nightmare was spirit token-palooza.
