It is time to update on "What is going on in Finland!" We had our presidential election (2nd round) today and Sauli Niinistö (Coalition Party/Right wing) won the election. Niinistö is a former justice and finance minister and has also been in charge in his political party and lost the last election in 2006 by a narrow margin after Tarja Halonen (which I believe was the first woman president in the world?). Pekka Haavisto from Green Party finished second. Both have quite similar political background as they are somewhat specialized in foreign affairs and both have been ministers. Sauli however has slightly wider experience. One curiousity from the elections was that Pekka Haavisto is the first gay candidate in Finland and did quite well. Actually I don't think any candidate from Green Party has ever done this well in Europe, and Europe is slightly more liberal than USA I quess. news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-world/niinisto-wins-poll-to-be-finnish-president-20120206-1r05d.htmlwww.ajc.com/news/nation-world/conservative-wins-finland-presidential-1332429.htmlThat's all folks!

Pekka Haavisto from Green Party finished second. That's quite interesting. From what I've seen, Green Parties rarely do well in North America. They are often fringe parties, or the parties people vote for when they don't know where to cast their vote. That such a party earn such good results says a lot about Finland and about Europe. Aaahhh. Gotta love Magic and how it allows players to meet and learn from people from all over the world. Thanks for sharing Matti.

So about a month from last update. Time for another!
Sauli Niinistö officially became the president in the 1st of March 2012.
As you may know Europe is under financial crisis and it has it's effect on Finland also, although we are still graded as AAA for lending, unlike many other countries that have been dropped to AA in the past months. So cuts are planned by the government and one of the biggest changes is the military reform. According to plans quite many military locations are merged and dismissed. This has also fueled some political heat as our Minister of Defence (from Swedish party) has apparently used his voice to save the only swedish location and therefore the situation has turned into language politics. And yes we do have three official languages in Finland and swedish is one of them.
In other news! We have our very own Justin Bieber. This is kind of new phenomena in Finland and oh my god - (pre-)teenagegirls are so crazy about him.

Our money is on fire as well, and Beiber-fever aka Robin-fever (bird flu?) ravages both our nations.

Long time no update. Gotta fix that!
Anyone ever heard of Angry Birds? Well that game was made by Finnish company named Rovio. And now they have published a new game that has received a very warm reception. Bad Piggies! I haven't tried it yet, have you?

Number#1 news yesterday and today in Finland have been about Nightwish! They kicked Anette Olzon away and replaced him with Floor Jansen temporarily to cover the rest of the world tour. Yesterday they played at Seattle, the home of MtG.

What the hell!? Again? The boys are tough on their leading girls.
I wasn't a big fan of Anette though, probably because I like Tarja so much. Do you know about Floor Jansen Matti? Is she any good?
