vs These are two burns spells that have similar characteristics: for R they deal 2 damage to creature or player and for extra mana they can deal an extra 2. I've been playing a couple of aggressive decks that tend to easily reach the alternative cost and while I believe one of these cards is definitely necessary in the deck, I'm not always sure which. Burst lightning is an instant and it requires 1 less mana to do its full 4 damage. This makes it useful for combat tricks against aggro decks and allows you to cast it at the end of turn for lots of damage against control decks. However, firebolt lets you distribute the 4 damage among 2 creatures, which can be very useful against aggro decks and control players would require 2 counterspells to counter both sides of the spell. I'm really not sure. Any thoughts?

Obviously it depends on the deck/build. But I think I would prefer Firebolt over Burst Lightning usually. The option to burn two targets is huge and CA rocks.

Depends on the deck. In aggressive strategies - Red, Red/Green, Red/Black - I'd rather have Burst Lightning. The instant-speed is important and the 4 damages allows the card to become a burn-finisher in the mid or late game.
In tempo-based strategies - mostly Red/Blue - I'd rather have Firebolt. Instant-speed is mostly the province of countermagic and bounce effects in those decks. A sorcery-speed burn spell is fine since you'll usually want to be proactive with your burn instead of being reactive anyway. The Flashback provides card economy in the late game, which is great.

General comment on the comparing cards thing: Most of the time those cards are just too different from each other with one fitting more into the aggressive, and the other into the controlish deck. Don't get me wrong, there are definitvely some tough card choices where a public discussion would help, like Auriok Sunchaser vs Carapace Forger in an Affinity deck but I kind of don't see the point in doing comparisons like these.

I think I prefer Firebolt over Burst Lightning. Sure, you're sacrificing instant speed, which is very relevant, but the flashback cost seems to make up for it.
Especially in that R/G/w build I've been working on. There are so few slots that are open to devote to burn. Having some with flashback gives me those extra slots without having to go to 64 cards in my deck.
It is also very relevant that the flashback colored cost is the same color as the initial cost.

I'm with Chris, and Grumpy. Though you give up Instant speed, having flashback can really stretch out the reach of your deck. I run four in my UR Delver deck and its very fun to attack and have my opp think he's got blocks set up and surprise them with a LBolt + Firebolt FTW.
