Tarja Turunen has also made at least one single album (My Winter Storm) but the music on that album is pretty boring, too bad I kinda liked it to be perfectly honest. Her second album, What Lies Beneath, is also interesting. Both are a lot more melodic than metal, but not without merits. News in August on her website mentioned that she was forming a new group: Harus. I'm definitely looking forward to learning more about that.

I have to admit that I don't know a lot of non-European bands which were/ are not hyped by the media. Having that said, I guess I prefer European alternative music. The genres range from Medieval, over Metal, to industrial. Examples would be a. Saltatio Mortis (Medieval) b. Equilibrium (Melodic/ Pagan Metal) c. Epica (which I prefer over Nightwish after Tarja Turunen left) d. Eisbrecher (that's what I'd call industrial) e. Faderhead (EBM) f. Letzte Instanz (alternative Rock, they used to be more on the Rock side; hope they return back to their roots a bit)
Since I listen to a quite broad spectrum, I could name several more bands (which I'll do if wanted). I didn't include any links but you can find them all on grooveshark.
