Hey everyone! I'm back, and after my first full week on mtgo, I was ready to take the community by storm (no storm pun intended - I hate that deck). A lot has happened in my second week. I got some more practice with the mbc deck, joined the pttp league, I met some cool people, and I made a new deck that I tried out!
Last time I left you, I had my mbc deck that cost about $14 and had some moderate success with it. Thanks to those who posted in last week's post with the deck suggestions. Unfortunately I didn't get to try them out, but I do intend on it. I really only got to play 1 match with my rats deck this week. Mainly because I was so busy this week, and if I did get time to play mtgo, I was rockin' out in league matches and making a name for myself.
The only match I played against was a boros landfall deck. My swagger level was at an all time high in this match because I had watched numerous videos on this deck, and felt like I had a good grasp of it. This was the deck that I was originally looking at building for my first deck. I started the match confident and on the draw. My opponent had me down to 5 life, but fear not comrades! I was able to disrupt his hand to 0, and when I corrupted his only creature, a porcelain legionnaire, (bringing life totals to 10 each) he conceded.
Game 2 I sided out the snuff out, figuring I would need the precious life, along with some edicts in favor of 2 victim of night, an echoing decay, and 2 disfigure. My opponent started with an adventuring gear and steppe lynx for some quick pressure. I wasn't worried and figured I would stabilize until BOOM! I somehow managed to skip my turn entirely. I tried recovering, but giving my opponent a free time walk is tough to bounce back from.
Game 3 was a disaster. I got stuck on 2 mana and could only kill so many of his creatures until I died. I'll touch upon this game probably next week.
So like I said above, I didn't have much time to play outside of league matches. My initial thought was to focus on financials for most of the post, but I think I'm going to cut that down a bit because there is something else I want to talk about eventually. So at the end of last week my total amount spent was $23.99 with the initial $9.99 to start an account and the $14 I spent on my mbc deck. I still had my 2 starting tickets and my m12 pack to back me up.
My first task was to finally sell my m12 booster. I held onto it way too long, but with limited time, I got sucked up into the tournament room and couldn't find the exit. I eventually sold it for 2.4 tix bringing me to a total of 4 tix and .4 bot credit.
My next step? To find a standard deck for the pauper league of course! I had no idea what to expect from the meta, but eventually saw an idea and ran with it. I swarmed the bots and found all the cards I needed for .33 tix! I swarmed the bots and found all the cards I needed for .33 tix! No, you're not crazy. You didn't accidentally read the exact same line, and no, I didn't make a mistake. I intentionally wrote that twice. This was the whole purpose of me going the financial route. .33 tickets is the same as a quarter, a nickel, and 3 pennies (assuming my math is correct, and it always is). I found more than that vacuuming out my car this weekend.
I told a buddy of mine (we started playing at the exact same time) about it. The first thing he said, "Is it any good?" Now, before I answer this question, let me get this off my chest: I play to win. I am as competitive as they come. After building the deck, I went straight to the forums and looked for some opponents to play. I never had a chance to test it, but I didn't need it. I saw the main synergies in the deck, and I may also be as cocky as they come.
To answer the question of whether it's good or not, I went 2-2 in the league with both losses coming to avery61, where both matches going to 3 games.
I'll leave it up to your assessment of success, but I know one thing: I had a blast. The deck is awesome, and I love piloting it. I will tweak it here or there but you can't really beat .33 tix. I looked up some prices online and ponders are going for 89 cents alone in paper! My biggest bit of advice here is to not let the "price barrier" get in the way if you're on the fence about joining mtgo. Yeah you can say I spent $14 on my mbc deck, but that was mainly due to my impatience and stubbornness. I was tired of waiting and eventually bought all the cards in one shot, where I probably could've saved money if I did a little more research. I was also stubborn and knew that I wanted to play control, even if there was much cheaper aggro decks that could be made.
Tips for a new player, from a new player:
I think I'll try to do this section with each post. I will probably be saying things that are already all over the Internet, but sometimes it's nice to hear it from a different perspective. The tip this week:
Take the leap of faith.
Before you go jumping off a bridge, let me explain. Mtgo can be very daunting at first. There are no tutorials, the ui is not friendly (see game 2 above where I skipped my turn), and you may not have a sense of where you should go once you activate an account. My advice is to get involved. Most of you already are, but if you're reading this and you're not a member of this community, there is no excuse! I am not a very outgoing person at first. Trust me, I can be the life of the party, but it takes some time for me to build up to that. I know that online it's a totally different beast, but the people that I have played with so far have been great. My suggestion is to do what I did. Look up the sign up thread for the pauper league and add everyone in it to your buddy list. After that, the ball is in your court. Try and branch out and contact someone. You want to play magic anyway, so why not get involved in some good, competitive fun?
Shout outs for this week go to avery & rockbass. Great talking/playing with you guys. I'm looking forward to some rematches!
