Hi guys, I'm looking for some guidance/advice on getting started with building a new deck in MTGO. I just want to play casually, but I'm primarily interested in playing the Innistrad cards, so I guess I'd be going for Block Constructed format? I'm wondering if it's possible to build a fun deck on a budget, or if all the good 'flavor' cards are non-common? I looked at the Intro Packs but for $13 I figure I can buy the cards piecemeal for less money. Hope this makes sense, thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi srudolph! Are you looking to play pauper? Standard pauper is very cheap format online. All cards are in the range of 0.02-0.06 tix pricerange, maybe with some random exceptions. This means a deck will cost you like a 1-2 tix. 13USD will allow you to play classic pauper decks too! Green stompy variants can be very cheap, especially after M13 is released and Rancor will cost less than 0.1 tix then I guess?

Hi yugular, yes I'm definitely interested in Pauper; I used to listen to the podcast all the time but got pulled away from MTG by other things. I guess I'm looking for a relatively cheap and quick way to dive into the Innistrad block. I don't have a ton of time to research and am not a good deck-builder, alas. -Steve

In block constructed you need more than 13USD to build even a semi-competitive deck. Pro Tour Barcelona was block format I guess? Maybe check out those decklists for advice?

Well, I think that Standard Pauper (and the league) is the cheapest, most effective way to go right now. My main deck is probably 80% Innistrad cards, so it should scratch that itch.
Separate from that, there's Block, which is going to up the price curve substantially. Dual Lands, Cavern of Souls, and spendy finishers in almost each color (Hellrider, Griselbrand, Entreat the Angels, etc) will cost more than Pauper by far. Although, if you put in the investment towards that now, some of those cards will probably stay relevant in Standard for the next year.

I got my league deck for .33 tix (the equivalent of 33 cents). This price even included the sideboard, and I think almost all the cards were .006 tix a piece. I would definitely suggest going that route. Pauper is fun as all get out. I would also make sure to listen to this week's podcast (not out as of now) because they'll be covering some decks from the league. Finally, I suggest reading my posts (shameless plug) on my first couple of weeks on mtgo. There is some good stuff, and great feedback from the community

Thanks for the feedback! I guess I'm going to have to take the plunge and create a deck, so lots of reading and research to do. I have in mind either a mono green or green/red werewolf deck. I know I'm going to get stomped regularly but as long as it's fun to play I won't mind too much. I was afraid that all the werewolves were uncommon, but looking at Gatherer I see that isn't the case.
