Ok, I couldn't help myself. I broke down. I'm going to play in my first ever paper competitive event. I just barely missed out on the original Ravnica goodness, and it's possibly my favorite block of all time, so I'm not going to do that this time around. I'm already officially registered at our FLGS and have chosen Izzet for my guild (go figure, right?)
Anyway, I thought I'd get a little advice from people on MTG appropriate etiquette and such, as I'm sure things function a little differently from AGoT tournaments.

Lol, and maybe some Febreeze to spray down some opponents. That's pretty much par for the course with gaming though.

Okay, even though it's a pre-release and supposedly more casual, you're going to have that one round with super-serious dude. He'll be constantly asking you if you're done with decisions, ask about which step you're on, etc. and be altoghether pushy and intimidating.
The best thing to do is be prepared for it going in. Just let him/her know that you're thinking about something, and to back off of you a little bit. The intimidation is equal parts lack of social ability and also trying to put you on tilt into making bad decisions. Don't let it get to you.
Now, for the other matches, just be cool and personable. You're bound to not be the only first timer there, and if you get paired against another one, you can have a really good conversation about the event in general.

My last prerelease (was also my first), for my first game I got paired with the eventual winner, but man after he was done wiping the floor with me, he was like "how many lands are you running?" "didn't you have a removal spell" & my favorite "mind if I take a look at your deck?" Needless to say, it left a very sour taste in my mouth.
Then there's the "Look at what I pulled guy (Avacyn, Tamiyo, AND foil Bonfire in sealed)" guy. Not usually a winner but won't stop bragging about the cool stuff he pulled and man this stuff is worth soooo much money on Star City blah blah blah.....
All I can say is there are many people playing at differing levels of competency, all with differing levels of "fun." Don't stop somebody else from having fun, and don't let anybody stop you from your fun either. If you're competitive, let the other player know. If you prefer to "take it easy" same thing, let them know.

Oh, I'm competitive for sure, and I've been playing Magic off and on for ages, so I'm not too worried about most things, but the only competitive Magic play I've done is online, and some of the particulars of Magic play aren't practiced in AGoT where I do most of my paper competing, so I'm curious about some things. Sideboarding, for instance. How the heck does that work in paper?
