While waiting for the Classic Pauper bannings to take effect, I decided to try out Standard Pauper for the first time and it was more fun than I expected. Here is a video of my first match: www.youtube.com/watch?v=J00mHVaY_y8I decided to play GW Midrange as it just seemed overpowered. Anyone have any experience of the deck? I am very unsure about the sideboard. What should I put in there and what does my sideboard plan look like? GW Midrange 10 Forest 6 Plains 4 Selesnya Guildgate 2 Haunted Fengraf = 22 lands 4 Attended Knight 4 Avacyn´s Pilgrim 3 Centaur Healer (should probably be four, I just owned three) 2 Deadly Recluse 4 Elvish Visionary 1 Keening Apparition 2 Sentinel Spider 4 Seraph of Dawn 4 Trusted Forcemage = 28 dudes 2 Pacifism 4 Prey Upon 4 Travel Preparations = 10 others SIDEBOARD 2 Deadly Recluse 2 Erase 1 Keening Apparition 3 Plummet 3 Ray of Revelation 3 Safe Passage 1 Sentinel Spider Comments? Thoughts? I know there are some people on this forum with a lot of experience of Standard Pauper, would be very interested in your opinions. What are my good matchups? My bad matchups?

Excellent video ~ and ok "I speak English like a drunken Viking" is going down as one of my favorite lines ever. I literally spewed a mouthful of beer all over my screen when you said that. Laughed so hard I could't breathe.

I will have to watch this tonight. My job blocks all the cool sites here at work.

Sissela,
I really enjoyed watching the match! As newcomer to the Standard Pauper format (after a nearly 18 year long break from MtG), can you tell me how determined your deck's mana requirements? This is probably a very basic question, but the best deck in the world will not go anywhere if it does not have enough "gas." Plus, as "the new guy" your answer will help me get better at building my own decks....
Thank you...

Thanks. Since then, I have played almost no Standard Pauper and right now I have lost touch with the format, while grinding for the MOCS I can only play sanctioned formats. There are, however, some great experts on Standard Pauper on this forum.
After April 17th I may get back to doing some Standard Pauper content if you are interested. I am also looking for a Standard Pauper video maker for the MagicGatheringStrat youtube channel. We do have some Standard Pauper material on mtgostrat.com

Sissela, I really enjoyed watching the match! Generally, you want 10 mana sources per color in a deck. This can be a tad tricky in what you count cards like evolving wilds as, but it generally is a good benchmark. For each mana symbol required beyond one, you will want to add (on average) another 4 sources. So 10, 14, 18, 22. The typical "starting" number for amount of lands is 20. You can do it by CMC, but a good rule of thumb is to play 26 lands in an all-out control or ramp, 24 midrange and 20 with a deck with a very low curve. From this number you adjust for cantrips and ramp. Running mana dorks, ponder/preordain, etc. lets you cut (very roughly) one land per two ran. So if delver runs 4 ponders and 4 preordains, it can run 16 land instead of 20 (brainstorm counts in legacy, but not in pauper). Note, this number is on the high side for cutting and can eventually create some issues. If you really were running 20 cantrips or mana dorks in a list, you'd probably want more than 10 land. 12 land seems to be the lower bound in which you always want to run. The above deck would be in the midrange category. It has CC 4 and 5 spells, and probably wants to get to 6 mana total. So you can start at 25, reduce 2 from Avacyn´s Pilgrim. I'd probably run 23 with an extra Haunted Fengraf, but visionaries partially cantrip, so the case for 22 can certainly be made. So sleeve up 22 (or 23) lands and test the deck. Mulligans aren't always the best indicator. If you find yourself wanting to draw your 4th, 5th and 6th land on regular occasions, you may want to increase. If flooding if a problem, you may want to look at decreasing the amount.
