How has people liked this format? I have played it only couple of times. Last night I played a fun draft in the format and my deck was fun to pilot, even though not very powerful - I didn't run a single rare for example.
I decided to force Boros after P1P1 Sunhome Guildmage, P1P2 Mugging and P1P3 Daring Skyjeck. The draft went on and red cards and Boros cards were wheeling, but White was cut heavily from both sides. In the end I had to pickup green creatures to get enough creatures and go Naya insted of Boros. I managed to get a total of 4x Mugging and in the end I had more creatures with Green than with White in them. The overall power of my creatures was good and I had solid removal with all the muggings and one Massive Raid, I also had 2x Martial Glory for games where I would need those in the sideboard.
R1G1 I am playing against Orzhov deck that lacks extort but has many defenders like Corpse Blockade. Well I can't beat him as he milled my only flying creature and Sunhome Guildmage, both the creatures that could potentially break the blockade in ground. I decide to just play his clock down and draw my library and lose. He sits at 11 minutes. I am at 16-17.
R1G2 Similar game, he builds up fortress but I get Sunhome Guildmage and Daring Skyjeck active and just beat him. He has only about 2mins left in the clock and he concedes the match.
R2 I play against Orzhov again, and he told me that he played a mirror in round1. So total of three Orzhov drafters in the table!! That explains how I didn't see any white cards after picks 1-3 in any pack. This guy had Gideon and lots of removal and wins me 2-1
R3 Simic player with lots of rares and uncommons at his disposal! G1 I manage to draw 4x Mugging in the early turns and kill his bombs and proceed to beat down. G2 He has a small manaflood but manages to stabilize. I boarded in one Martial Glory which I then used to win the game
This draft taught me few lessons:
1. Don't force a strategy if it becomes apparent very soon that it isn't open. I could have switched to Gruul and had more powerful deck.
2. Give yourself a chance to win. I match1 I played the clock in game1 so that I was able to win even though he was favored in the MU.
3. Take your time in sideboarding, Martial Glory helped me to clear blockers I couldnt deal with Mugging, but still it was a right decision to have it in the sideboard.
